he RiverSeries™ is a collection of works with a central theme, and
counter to expectations that theme is not (quite) rivers. It is flow. Fluid
motion. The motion of a dancer, of Tai Chi, of honey. Of water. And water flows
like nothing else. The Chinese philosopher Lao Tzu said in the 3rd Century B.C.,
“Nothing on Earth is so weak and yielding as water, but for breaking down the firm
and strong it has no equal.” And so I pay homage with my art to water: liquid, gas,
solid and states yet unknown - it all flows. I work in wood, metal, stone
and synthetics because the materials are all beautiful and all capable of artistic
metaphor from within their own charac-teristics. Language frames and alters the way
we perceive the world. The language of art is partly in the materials used, and
I find it entrancing to bring flow to and from the different materials I work with.
o, when you’re canoeing a river, skiing a glacier, letting the wind flow
through your hair, you and I are part of the flow of this beautiful world.
Enjoy.
